Overview

Buddhist Trail & Taj Mahal Tour: Walk in the footsteps of Lord Buddha and explore the life of the Enlightened One.—Bodh Gaya (where he attained enlightenment), Lumbini (his birthplace), Varanasi-Sarnath (site of his first sermon), and Kushinagar (place of his Mahaparinirvana). The itinerary also includes a visit to the Taj Mahal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the world-famous monument built by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of Empress Mumtaz Mahal.


Itinerary

Upon arriving at Delhi International Airport and completing all customs formalities, board your flight to Varanasi.

Upon arrival at Varanasi Airport, also known as Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport (VNS), and after completing all customs procedures, please proceed to the exit gate. Our Punpun Trails representative will be waiting for you in the arrival lobby, holding a signboard with your name.

You will then be transferred to your hotel. Upon arrival, check-in at the hotel (standard check-in time is 2:00 PM). lunch at the hotel and take some time to rest.

Optional 

In the evening, proceed to witness the Aarti ceremony at Dashashwamedh Ghat, located on the banks of the sacred River Ganga.
(Please note: This area is a no-vehicle zone. Vehicles will stop at the designated parking area. You will need to walk or take a rickshaw through a bustling market to reach Dashashwamedh Ghat.)

Take an early morning boat ride on the Ganges to witness the serene sunrise. Return to the hotel for breakfast. Later, drive to Sarnath (approx. 15 km / 30 minutes), one of the four main pilgrimage sites for Buddhists. It is the place where Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment at Bodh Gaya

Visit the Dhamek Stupa, a tall, round structure that is 34 meters high and marks the place where Buddha taught. Also visit the Dharmarajika Stupa, where Buddha is believed to have rested and meditated, and the Chaukhandi Stupa. Continue to Mulgandha Kuti Vihara, and then head to the Sarnath Museum (closed on Fridays), which displays some of the finest examples of Buddhist sculpture.

Return to the hotel for lunch. Later, drive to Bodh Gaya (approx. 270 km / 6 hours), where  Lord Buddha attained enlightenment .  On arrival in Bodh Gaya, check in at the hotel. The rest of the day is free.

After breakfast at the hotel, proceed for a full-day tour of Bodhgaya. Visit the Mahabodhi Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Bodhi Tree, where the Buddha attained enlightenment.

Walk through the peaceful temple complex and witness the exact spot where the Buddha meditated. Other important sites within the Mahabodhi Temple Complex include:

Rajayatana Tree

 

Later, visit Sujata Village – the place where Sujata, a local girl, offered rice milk to the fasting Siddhartha, marking a turning point in his journey. Afterward, visit various International Monasteries and the 80-feet Buddha Statue.

Return to the hotel for lunch.

In the afternoon, drive to Dungeshwari Caves (approximately 18 km). Also known as the Mahakala Caves, this mountain is also referred to as Pragbodhi Mountain. It is believed that Gautama Buddha meditated here for a long period before moving to Bodh Gaya. A golden bony Buddha statue is enshrined in one of the cave temples.

In the evening, attend the Sutta Chanting (in Pali) at the Mahabodhi Temple.

Timing: 18:30 – 19:00

Full Day Bodhgaya Tour – Mahabodhi Temple, Monasteries, Sujata Village & Dungeshwari Caves

After breakfast at the hotel, drive to Patna – the capital city of Bihar, located 170 km away (approx. 6 hours by road). On the way, stop at Rajgir and Nalanda, two of the most significant sites in Buddhist history.

Rajgir – the sacred land of Buddha’s teachings and ancient kingdoms. Lord Buddha spent 12 years here, and the First Buddhist Council after his Mahaparinirvana was held at the Saptaparni Caves.

Visit Gridhrakuta Hill (Vulture’s Peak), where the Buddha often stayed after delivering sermons. This hill can be reached by an aerial ropeway (chair lift) and offers panoramic views of the surrounding area.

Vishwa Shanti Stupa (World Peace Pagoda), built by Japanese monk Fujii Guruji, located atop the Ratnagiri Hills.

Venuvana (Bamboo Grove), a monastery surrounded by bamboo trees where the Buddha spent many rainy retreats. It was gifted to him by King Bimbisara.

After lunch at a local restaurant, drive about 15 km (approx. 30 minutes) to Nalanda.

Visit the Ruins of Nalanda Mahavihara, the oldest residential university in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known globally as a major Buddhist learning center. Also visit the Nalanda Archaeological Museum (closed on Fridays).

Later, drive to  Vaishali  (approx. 110 km / 3 hours). On arrival, check in at the hotel.

Breakfast at the hotel. visit Vaishali, the site that hosted the Second Buddhist Council.

  • Buddha Stupa-I: The exterior of this stupa has a plain surface. A part of the sacred ashes of Lord Buddha was enshrined here in a stone casket.

  • Buddha Stupa-II: Believed to contain a part of the ashes of Lord Buddha.

  • Vishwa Shanti Stupa: Located on the southern side of the Coronation Tank, it was built by the Buddha Vihar Society.

  • Ashoka Pillar & Kolhua Stupa: Emperor Ashoka erected the Lion Pillar at Kolhua. It is a highly polished pillar made of red sandstone, topped by a bell-shaped capital. A life-sized lion figure sits on top of the pillar.

Lunch at a restaurant.

After lunch, drive to Kushinagar (approx. 210 km / 5hours), one of the most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites, where Gautam Buddha attained Mahaparinirvana.

En route, visit Kesariya Stupa – the largest Buddhist stupa in the world.

Upon arrival, check in at the hotel.

Dinner and overnight stay at Kushinaga

Vaishali - Kushinagar

Breakfast at the hotel. Proceed to visit the Mahaparinirvana Temple, where Buddha left his corporeal self and attained Mahaparinirvana. Inside the temple is a 6.1-meter-long reclining Buddha statue.

Visit the Rambhar Stupa, also known as Mukutbandhan Chaitya, a large stupa that rises to a height of 49 feet. It is the cremation site of Lord Buddha and is located about 1.5 km from the Nirvana Temple.

Return to the hotel for lunch.

Later, drive to Lumbini (approx. 180 km / 5 hours), a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the birthplace of Lord Buddha. It is one of the holiest and most significant sites for followers of Buddhism. Prince Siddhartha (Lord Buddha) was born here under a sal tree on a full moon day in the month of April.

En route, stop at the India-Nepal border for visa and immigration formalities. (Please ensure you have a double or multiple-entry visa for India.)

Upon arrival, check in at the hotel.

Dinner and overnight stay in Lumbini.

 Kushinagar – Lumbini (180 Kms / 05 Hours )

Breakfast at the hotel. Later, visit the Mayadevi Temple, dedicated to the mother of Lord Buddha. Inside the temple, a sacred stone marks the exact location where Buddha was born.

Then visit the Ashoka Pillar, erected by Emperor Ashoka to honor this sacred birthplace, and the Puskarini Sacred Pond, where baby Prince Siddhartha was bathed after his birth.

Return to the hotel for lunch.

After lunch, drive to Kapilavastu, the childhood home of Gautam Buddha, where he spent the first 29 years of his life.

Later, continue the journey to Sravasti, a town where Lord Buddha spent 25 rainy seasons and delivered many teachings. This place is also home to the Anand Bodhi Tree, believed to be grown from a branch of the original Bodhi Tree and planted by his close disciple, Ananda.

Upon arrival, Check in at the hotel. Dinner and overnight stay in Sravasti.

Lumbini – Kapilvastu- Saravasti (200 Kms/ 5 Hours0

Breakfast at the hotel. Visit the main attractions of Sravasti — Pakki Kuti and Kachchi Kuti. A short distance from Mahet lies Sahet, spread over an area of 32 acres. It was here that Anathapindika, a wealthy merchant, built the Jetavana Vihar for Lord Buddha.

Also visit the Thai, Sri Lankan, Myanmar, Chinese, and Korean monasteries, along with the Swarna Gandha Kuti, the Ananda Bodhi Tree, and the Angulimal Cave.

Return to the hotel for Lunch  and then drive to Lucknow.

Dinner and overnight stay in Lucknow.

Sravasti – Lucknow (180 kms / 4:30 hrs drive)-

Breakfast at the hotel. Drive to Agra (approximately 4 hours 30 minutes) via the Lucknow–Agra Expressway. Upon arrival, check in to the hotel.

After lunch, visit the Taj Mahal (closed on Fridays), a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a world-famous monument built by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of Empress Mumtaz Mahal.

Next, visit the majestic Agra Fort, located on the banks of the Yamuna River, renowned for its architectural splendor and rich Mughal history.

Return to the hotel for dinner and an overnight stay in Agra.

Lucknow - Agra  ( 340  Km/  4 :30Hours )  Lucknow Agra Express Way

Breakfast at the hotel. Proceed to Delhi via the Yamuna Expressway. Upon arrival, visit the National Museum (closed on Mondays and national holidays), which houses 20 bone fragments of Buddha—sacred relics displayed in an ornamental casket and known as the Kapilvastu Relics.

Drive past India Gate, the President’s House, and other government buildings. The rest of the day is free for shopping.

Later, transfer to the airport in time for your departure.
