Dev Deepawali in Varanasi, known as the Diwali of the Gods, will be celebrated on 24 November 2026, the full moon day of the Hindu month of Kartik. The festival commemorates Lord Shiva’s victory over the demon Tripurasura and is observed with great enthusiasm in Varanasi, where devotees light diyas along the Ganga Ghats. People take a holy dip in the Ganga, believing it purifies their souls. Deepdan is performed after moonrise, during which devotees light thousands of diyas (oil lamps). This is followed by the Ganga Aarti, performed by 24 Brahmin priests along with 24 girls chanting Vedic prayers. The sight of the illuminated ghats is truly magical.
